Student members who are in the second year of their Massage Therapy Program and are graduating in 2024 can attend this course and receive PD credits when they become an Active MTAA member.

This course will provide RMTs operating as sole proprietors with the skills they'll need to confidently manage many of the financial aspects of their business. Jordan Pierson received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Mount Royal University, and his designation as a Chartered Professional Accountant from CPA Canada. Jordan is married to an RMT and knows the unique needs of the profession. Jordan is known for his fun laid-back style of teaching and his confidence and expertise with the course material makes this course a must for all RMTs.

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, you will understand:

  • The differences between sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations;
  • The advantages and disadvantages to incorporation;
  • The fundamental elements of the balance sheet and income statement;
  • Some of the best practices to ensure proper bookkeeping;
  • Common red flags that may trigger an audit or review by the CRA;
  • How income tax brackets work and why you shouldn't be worried about moving into a higher tax bracket;
  • The difference between operating and capital expenses, and the impact write-offs have on taxable income;
  • Which expenses are eligible for deduction;
  • Know when and how to register for a GST number;
  • Understand what input tax credits (ITCs) are and the impact they have on net GST owed

What you will need to bring:

  • Indoor shoes
  • A water bottle 
  • Pen or pencil 
  • A notebook 

You do not need to bring a laptop or any of your financial information. The class is lecture-style with time for Q&A. You will also be given access to the slidedeck after the class for your continued reference.
